Barry F. Beck Sinkhole Conference Student Scholarship
"While the sudden collapse of the land surface is the most dramatic effect of sinkhole development, there are also other environmental hazards related to sinkholes."
Dr. Barry F. Beck, 1988
This scholarship honors the memory of Barry F. Beck, Ph.D., a pioneer in the scientific study of sinkholes and founder of the Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Environmental and Engineering Impacts of Karst, more commonly called the “Sinkhole Conference.” Dr. Beck had a profound understanding of the many ways sinkholes and karst affect human lives. He thus developed the Sinkhole Conference series to promote and facilitate an information exchange among engineers and geoscientists, and to foster the successful application of engineering, geotechnical, hydrological, and environmental disciplines to the management of karst terrains and their impacts on society. The Sinkhole Conference is held every two years and includes published proceedings to keep the information current, the lines of communication active, and the information broadly accessible. One goal of the Sinkhole Conference is to occur in different locations to facilitate broad communication among karst engineers and geoscientists.
Inaugurated in 2013, the Barry F. Beck Sinkhole Conference Student Scholarship is a competitive grant awarded to one or more students presenting research results at the Sinkhole Conference. Recipients are awarded full conference registration and reimbursement up to $1,000 for conference travel expenses and are recognized with a certificate and name badge ribbon, as well as being mentioned in the conference program, website, and during the opening ceremony.
How to Sponsor the Barry F. Beck Sinkhole Conference Student Scholarship
Up to 10 Barry Beck Scholarships may be awarded for a Sinkhole Conference. One is funded from the conference budget and the rest depend on donations. Donations fall into the following categories:
- Sponsor: A donation of $1,500 or more allows the award to be labeled with the Sponsor’s name, such as Acme Corporation – Beck Scholarship. The Sponsor will be distinguished in this manner in all recognitions and announcements of the student’s scholarship, including the conference program and website. If the donation exceeds $1,500, additional awards will be given in $1,500 increments. Any excess funds will go into the…
- General Beck Scholarship Fund: This fund is for donations less than $1,500. Donors will be acknowledged in the conference program and website. Money in this fund will be carried until the total is sufficient to support a scholarship and will be spent for the next Sinkhole Conference with a qualifying student.
Supporting students through this scholarship provides them the opportunity to grow substantially as scientists, learn more about the significant challenges of karst environments, and to establish personal connections with potential employers and partners in future cave and karst research. We hope you will support them. Donations may be made below or by contacting Dr. George Veni.
